City of Hannover

The State Capital of Hanover operates a central Active Directory system using Microsoft Ex-change as the mail platform. Around 10,000 user accounts are organised in a single forest, ac-cording to department and organisational unit. The central directory is used to manage access authorisation for applications and data.

Task

The objective in the introduction of an administration tool was to automate recurring processes and therefore reduce the administrative workload. All modifications to the directory service should be logged and traceable, and subject to completeness and plausibility checks before being executed. Certain tasks should be made directly accessible to the relevant departments using web-based application procedures. Small changes to processes and workflows, or the addition of departments or reorganisation, should be possible for the customer itself to implement.

Project

Following installation of the Operations Manager system in test and live environments, process workflows were created for the main administrative tasks. The detailed definition of the processes was worked out in a week-long workshop held at the start of the project. Alongside the management of user accounts and computer accounts, processes concerning the creation and allocation of rights on file servers were also considered. Templates containing all the important pro-perties and specific departmental options were created for the individual organisational units. This data defines the available standard processes in Operations Manager and adapts them according to the customer's naming conventions and structures. In total, the Operations Manager implements 35 types of application, from user unlocking to creation of new departmental file stores. The first department was started after around 4 weeks, as a pilot project. After this additional areas came online, a few at a time.

Solution

In the Unicat Operations Manager, the City of Hanover has opted for an innovative and flexible standard solution that can be adapted to the adminstration's own structures. Thanks to the Operations Manager's web-based applications system, users, computers and groups can be managed from any computer, improving response times and increasing the service level. All transactions are fully logged so that all actions can be traced. With additional staff training, the solution has already been enhanced by the customer to manage Terminal Server properties.
